IRCTC train ticket reservations new rules: 10 things to know

IRCTC ticket reservations rules: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has revised its rules for booking train tickets online. The Indian Railways, world’s fourth largest railway network, has brought in changes in an effort to aid travellers. Now, tickets can be booked up to 120 days in advance, an Aadhaar-verified user can book 12 tickets every month and passengers can now claim refunds if the train fails to depart within three hours of the scheduled departure.
Now, online ticket booking has been made time sensitive. This means, 25 seconds has been allotted to fill up passenger details. Further, the minimum input time for Captcha on passenger details page and payment page is 5 seconds.
Here are 10 IRCTC rules to remember while making reservations:
1. A passenger can book online tickets 120 days in advance, excluding the date of journey. Six tickets can be booked monthly from one user ID, and 12 if the user is Aadhaar-verified. A maximum of two tickets can be booked from one ID during 8-10 am.
IRCTC, IRCTC ticket reservation, train ticket booking
2. Tatkal tickets can be booked a day before travel, starting 10 am for AC coaches and 11 am for sleeper class.
3. From a single user ID, only two Tatkal tickets can be booked in opening Tatkal from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
4. In case of Tatkal bookings, a maximum of six berths/seats can be booked at a time for a specified journey between any two stations served by the train subject to distance restrictions in force.
5. Only one Tatkal ticket can be booked in a single session (except return journey).
6. Single page or quick book services are not available between 8 am and 12 noon. One user can have only one log-in session at a time. Captcha is available at login, passenger detail and payment web pages.
7. Agents are allowed to book tickets between 8 am and 8.30 am, 10 am and 10.30 am and, 11 am and 11.30 am. Authorised travel agents cannot book tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes after online reservation opens. This is to prevent them from booking several tickets in a short span, and give passengers time to book tickets for themselves.
8. Online ticket booking has been made time sensitive. The standard time to fill up passenger details is 25 seconds. The minimum input time for Captcha on passenger details page and payment page is 5 seconds.
9. For payment through net-banking, subscribers of all banks will now have to verify themselves with a one-time password (OTP).
10. Passengers can now claim refunds:
* if the train doesn’t depart within three hours of the scheduled departure.
* if the train’s route has been diverted and he/she doesn’t want to travel on that route.
* if a passenger has been shifted to a lower class than what the ticket was booked for provided he/she doesn’t want to travel in the changed class. But, if a passenger is willing to travel in the lower class, he/she will be paid back the difference.
If you are holding a confirmed reservation ticket and for some reasons you cannot travel or have a change in plans, you can transfer it to another person or your family member. Here is a guideline released by the Indian Railways, world’s fourth largest railway network, to avail this facility:
# “Chief Reservation Supervisor of important stations are authorised by Railway Administration to permit the change of name of a passenger having a seat or berth reserved in his name,” says a statement released by the Indian railways.
# If the passenger is a government servant, proceeding on duty, he/she can make written request 24 hours before the scheduled departure of trains. The name on the ticket will be changed to another person’s name for whom the ticket transfer is sought.
# A passenger can also transfer his confirmed ticket to another member of his family, meaning, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband and wife. He/she just needs to make a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

# Another condition applies where the passengers are students of a recognised educational institute. In such a case, the head of the institution can make a written request 48 hours before the scheduled departure. The reservation made in the name of any student can be transferred to any other student of the same institute.
# If the passengers are members of a marriage party, then any person deemed to be head of the group can make a written request 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. The reservation made in the name of any member of the marriage party can be transferred to any other person, in this way.
# The facility can also be availed by a group of cadets of National Cadet Corps who have confirmed reservation ticket/tickets but need to transfer it/them to any other cadet. Any officer, who is head of such a group, can make a written request 24 hours before the train’s departure.
Indian Railways has further said that such request will be granted only once. However, in case of students, marriage party and NCC cadets, such request for change in excess of 10 per cent of the total strength of group shall not be granted.

  1. In case of change of name for e-ticket, option to be given in on line reservation than going to railway station. 120 days in advance booking to be changed to 60 days as earlier. No body can take a confirmed leave from office (4 months before) which will be extra burden for customer who will cancelled at that time.

So much has been said about restrictions and controls but to help a customer pl include a demo video of step by step procedure for booking, payments, cancellation, how to find booking/booked history starting from opening page. I had so much difficulty in finding the cancellation menu the other day I spent nearly 2-3 hours and was nearly exhausted to cancel my booked ticket after they have changed the formats. Whenever you do modifications changes should be explained to the customer with the help of a demo video and the corresponding link should be attached to the old site to guide the customer.

      The rule that the confirmed ticket can be changed to a person other than family member is giving opportunity for black marketing by Agents and others.

  32. Common man doing railway booking cannot do the booking of railway ticket in such a sort span of time limit for filling the form as he is doing this job for himself or his family and is doing it once in a while. I think this idea might have been put forth by Agents Lobby so that common man will not be able to book the ticket himself and naturally he will either rush to agent or railway counter. The very idea of booking the ticket on line by non habitual person will come in danger and agents and agents only will be benefited.

  45. There is a solution provided by IRCTC in the site. It is called Master list of Passengers All you have to do is to fill the details of all 6 passengers before hand. This icon is then available in right hand side. At the time of booking you can use this list to tick off the name of passengers who wish to travel and all the required data will then auto fill. You can cross check and proceed. This saves time,

After making full payment I got a message that due to technical issues the transaction has failed and that I should book the same ticket again. I booked the ticket again by the same train and made payment again. To my surprise I found that both the tickets were in confirmed status. I had to cancel the first ticket and IRCTC charged me Rs.280 as cancellation charges, though I had to cancel the ticket only due to technical issue of IRCTC website/server.
    I wrote to them to refund cancellation charges but there is no sensible response.

    This is the second time I have similar experience. IRCTC should not harass senior citizens with these technical issues and loot them.

  48. It is impossible to fill in passenger details within 25 seconds and enter payment details in 5 seconds. What is the wisdom in imposing these restrictions; these user-unfriendly steps which must not implemented. If railways are seriously interested in introducing user friendly features, here are some suggestions:

    1 Reduce cancellation charges - ticket cancelled is issued to someone else who pays full fare;
    2 Make known if lower berth requested is available, do not allot what you have/like;
    3 Have public address system in each compartment of trains to make announcements about next station/late running of train, estimated time of arrival at destination;
    4 Have closer control over bookings by agents who use illegal methods to book tickets;
    5 Ensure toilets in trains are cleaned; ensure water is available all the time;
    6 Ensure all fans and lights in the train are in working condition;
    7 Ensue seats/berths/windows are in working condition;
    8 Always keep the Pantry car in a hygienic condition;
    9 Have better safety devices to ensure passenger safety ;
    10 Have stronger security measures for security of passengers in the nights;

We immediately tried to file TDR but system did not allow as train already departed. We sent mail to IRCTC to refund the amount as there being no fault of us because booking confirmation neven sent to us either through Email or SMS. PNR No. is 8707942309. 51. Time is too less to fill the application with in 25 seconds and booking period. Nobody can fill form in the given time. This is totally discouraging common people to book on line. Booking of tickets 120 days in advance will increase manipulations as nobody plans their journey 120 days (4 months) in advance. 65. Why is IRCTC so much unfriendly for users? Please consider the non-IT professionals & senior citizens who are not as fast like those agents as your dependents. How do you expect a 65& above years old person to fill the passengers details in 25 seconds? The Captcha time of 5 seconds, is too less. To understand what is written in the box itself will take almost 5 seconds.
    Number of tickets from 2, at any time of booking altogether needs to be re-thinking. If me and my wife along with our grown up daughter and grandchildren are to travel overnight, we will need to be booked together to get same proximity seats. Therefore, the number of limited 2 tickets should be increased to 4 or 5.

The railways must act on the comments.a)the time for booking of tickets must not be time bound b) 120 days for advance booking is nothing but loot by the railways by locking up money for 4 months and earning money on cancellations. c) reduce advance booking to 10 days which would avoid corruption and also not clog up the internet by travel agents and touts and booking clerks in nexus with agents. d) Travel by railway employees and their family must be restricted and travel to their home towns once a year and free passes to retired railway personnel stopped..e) Rates of food items must be displayed in platforms and carriages of the trains so that overcharging by catering staff is checked.

  73. I wonder if IRCTC is reading these comments from numerous passangers and analysing them for the required improvement to make it public friendly. I wish they would take note of the above comments and improve the system to make it more people friendly.

  74. For filling entry time is very short because we will have to type names , select gender then age and other specifications also . For that 25 sec is very less time. Moreover if we are booking our ticket while traveling and due to network problem we got signed out then we will not be able to book ticket as only one time login is allowed. So I think some revision in rules still required if IRCTC really want to make it passenger friendly. Because we all are not IT person who have very good typing speed.

  75. Technology to be user friendly and Senior citizen should not get harassed or disappointed, while filling details.

  76. Firstly few people can plan before 120 days. 60 days before is good. Time frame for entering details and captcha/payment is really foolish. Cancellation charge for WL ticket is utterly looting the public.

  77. Mostly railway want to earn much interest over public money through 120 days res time. Again lot of people may cancel and again they earn through cancellation charges

  78. Time for filling up details is very less and unrealistic not only for Sr. Citizens but also for many. From where IRCTC officers get these stupid idea, God only knows Probably, they want to encourage agents who employ superfast data entry people. I don't think IRCTC is interested in passengers

  79. YES IRCTC GIVEN VERY LESS TIME FOR PAYMENT IF SOME PROBLEM OCCURS LIKE NETWORK(INTERNET PROBLEM )THEN , THEY MUST IMPROVE THERE SITE IT MEANS IRCTC CAN WORKS WITHOUT INTERNET, SO NO PROBLEM OF NETWORK, THIS BOOKING ONLY FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE ADHARA CARD, AND TOILET CAN STORE IN SMALL TANK BELLOW THE TRAIN THIS TANK IS CLOSE WHEN THE TRAIN IS IN PLATFORM AND REST OF ITS OPEN , SO OUR TRAIN PLATFORM CAN BE NEAT AND CLEAR AND NO BAD SMELL TOLERATE PLATFORM PASSENGER.

  80. I fully agree that time limit to fill passengers detail and captcha need to be revised upward. Travel agent and individual should not be allowed to book tickets at same time.

  81. The Captcha is not easily recognisable and hence, the time limit to enter Captcha should be increased to minimum 15 seconds to facilitate time for two or three attempts. Similarly, The time limit of 25 seconds set for entering data is insufficient especially when booking for six persons. For this, U cannot include each and every new name occasionally used in the Passenger Master List. The website should be more user-friendly.

  82. Poor decision of IRCTC, as it is just to benefit travel agents only. Below are my suggestions -

    1) advance reservation should not be more than 60 days.

    2) very less time to fill passengers details even a typist with speed of 35 wpm can't fill details in this duration so it should be raised upto to 2 mins as a ticket holds up to 6 pax details.

    3) online process should be there for name name change as ticket window don't entertain online customers in good way.

  83. Rajagopalan.
    For technical error two times I have booked ticket and I have suffered cancelling one ticket. It lose to me.
    BJP is trying to collapse the present system and put inconvenience to public.
    Before introducing any system they have to see practicality.
    The man who is making system is not going to suffer because he will get every thing at free of cost for life time.
    The decision authority should have some ideas in the system.
    God only save country.

  85. Time limit is to fill up the names and captcha is too less, especially for the Sr. Citizens like me aged 66 years. Authorties May please reconsider it with no limits. If limits are compulsory, make it as two minute for names and 30 seconds for CAPTCHA.
    Thanks

  87. Any one(IRCTC officials) reads these.It is unnecessary to waste time. Several requests were made on behalf of Dr.citizen regarding increase of time. No one ever bothered.
