RBI Cheque Clearance Rule: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a new cheque clearance system for bank account holders, which will come into effect from October 4, 2025. Under the new system, your check will now be cleared within a single day, eliminating the need for customers to wait for days. According to the RBI, cheque will now be cleared within a few hours.
Learn how your cheque will be cleared
The RBI stated that banks will use the CTS (Cheque Truncation System) feature to clear cheque within a single day. Under this system, when you deposit a check, the bank will send a scanned copy to the relevant bank. The bank must accept or reject it within a specified time.
If the check contains the correct date, payee name, and amount, and the signature matches your existing signature at the bank, your cheque will be cleared the same day. The RBI also stated that any overwriting will result in the cheque being considered invalid and rejected.
RBI to launch in two phases
According to the RBI, the cheque clearance system will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will begin on October 4, 2025, and will continue until January 3, 2026. In this phase, after a cheque is deposited in a bank, the concerned bank will have to accept or reject it by 7 p.m.
The second phase, which will begin on January 3, 2026, will reduce the RBI cheque clearance time to just three hours. This will greatly facilitate customers, as previously, cheque clearance times took two to three days, causing numerous difficulties.
