The IMD had in April forecast above-normal rainfall for the 2025 monsoon season, ruling out the possibility of ‘El Nino’ ​​conditions, which are associated with below-normal rainfall over the Indian subcontinent.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an upper air cyclonic circulation is forming near the Karnataka coast in the Arabian Sea around May 21, which may turn into a low pressure area by May 22. Cyclonic circulations are present in South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu near the Bay of Bengal, which will affect the weather. Due to this, light to moderate rains will occur in South India for the next seven days. There is a possibility of thundershowers and lightning. Strong winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph may blow during this period. Heavy rains are expected in Kerala and Karnataka. Heavy to very heavy rains may occur at isolated places in coastal Karnataka on May 22, 25 and 26. Extremely heavy rain warnings have been issued in North Kerala on May 20 and in coastal and ghat areas of Karnataka on May 20 and 21.

According to the IMD, Northeast India is likely to receive widespread light to moderate rainfall for the next seven days. Arunachal Pradesh will receive rain on 20, 22 and 26 May. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from 20 to 26 May. Very heavy rain is likely in Assam and Meghalaya on 20 and 21 May. Rainfall is likely in West Bengal and Sikkim from 20 to 23 May. Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar from 20 to 24 May. Light to moderate rain is likely in Goa, Maharashtra and Marathwada from 20 to 24 May. Strong winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph will blow during this period. Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places in Gujarat from 20 to 24 May and in Saurashtra and Kutch from 22 to 24 May.

Bad condition due to continuous rain in Bengaluru

Due to heavy rains in Bengaluru for the last 36 hours, life remained affected on Tuesday as well. Traffic was disrupted at many places amid submerged roads while the death toll in water-related incidents in the state rose to 5. Due to heavy rains, an island-like situation was created in the city’s Sai Layout. Here the lower floors of the houses are half submerged, due to which people are not able to come out of the houses. Officials said that about 150 people were evacuated to safer places on Monday. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMB) arranged food and water for the people in Sai Layout. Residents have complained that the municipal agencies are not concerned about the problems of the people living in Sai Layout. Due to heavy rains, an orphanage in Hennur in the city was also flooded. The fire and rescue department along with the disaster response force rescued the people present in the orphanage.

Monsoon likely to reach Kerala in 4-5 days

The southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala in the next four to five days, ahead of the normal onset date of June 1, the IMD said on Tuesday. The weather department had earlier forecast that the monsoon would hit Kerala by May 27. According to data, if the monsoon reaches Kerala as expected, it will be the earliest monsoon to hit the Indian mainland since 2009. In 2009, the monsoon arrived on May 23. Normally, the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15. Last year, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 30, in 2023 it reached on June 8, in 2022 on May 29, in 2021 on June 3, in 2020 on June 1, in 2019 on June 8 and in 2018 on May 29.
