New luggage Limit: Big news! Extra baggage charges will be levied if you carry luggage beyond this limit on the railways, know the rules before traveling.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav clarified in the Lok Sabha that passengers will be charged for carrying more than the free allowance during train travel, and the railway has set limits for luggage by class. The free allowance is 35 kg in second class, 40 kg in sleeper class, 40 kg in AC three-tier and chair car, 50 kg in first class and AC two-tier class, and 70 kg in AC first class.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that passengers will be charged for carrying luggage beyond the set free allowance while traveling by train. He was responding to a question from MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, who asked whether the Railways would implement baggage regulations for passengers similar to those at airports.
The Railway Minister stated that currently, there are maximum limits on the amount of luggage passengers can carry inside coaches, depending on the class. He provided information on the free luggage allowance and the maximum limit for each class.
How much luggage are passengers allowed to carry?
According to the information, passengers traveling in second class can carry up to 35 kg of free luggage, and up to 70 kg can be carried for a fee. Sleeper class passengers can carry 40 kg of free luggage, with a maximum limit of 80 kg.
An additional fee will be charged for carrying more than the permitted limit.
Accessible to passengers in AC three-tier and chair car coaches is allowed up to 40 kg of free luggage, and this is the maximum limit. Passengers traveling in first class and AC two-tier coaches can carry up to 50 kg of free luggage, with a maximum limit of 100 kg. AC first class passengers can carry up to 70 kg of free luggage, with a maximum limit of 150 kg.
The Railway Minister clarified that the maximum limit includes the free luggage allowance. He added that passengers can carry more than the permitted free luggage allowance with them in the coach, but will incur a fee of 1.5 times the prescribed rate.
Railway Minister gave information
Vaishnav said that trunks, suitcases, and boxes measuring up to 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm (length x width x height) are permitted as personal baggage by passengers in coaches. Any luggage exceeding any of these dimensions will not be permitted in the coach and must be booked in the brake van or parcel van.
