Axis Bank said that customers who make extra transactions after the free transaction limit will now be charged Rs 23 per transaction. Till now this charge was Rs 21, that is, now Rs 2 more will have to be paid. This charge will be applicable on both Axis Bank and other banks’ ATMs. Apart from this, tax will be charged separately.
RBI’s new rule also applicable
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a notification on March 28, 2025 stating that the ATM interchange fee will now be decided by the ATM network. Also, from May 1, 2025, if any bank customer exceeds the free transaction limit, a maximum fee of Rs 23 can be charged on him. These rules will also apply to Cash Recycler Machines (except cash deposit).
What is ATM interchange fee?
ATM interchange fee is the amount that one bank pays to another bank for using its ATM. For example, if you are a customer of HDFC Bank and withdraw money from SBI’s ATM, then HDFC has to pay interchange fee to SBI. This amount is often charged from the customer.
How many free transactions are available?
According to RBI from 1 May 2025
In metro cities: 3 free transactions per month (including ATMs of your bank and other banks)
In non-metro cities: 5 free transactions monthly
How much is the charge of other banks
HDFC Bank
Metro cities: 3 free transactions
Non-metro cities: 5 free
After that, Rs 23 for cash withdrawal and Rs 8.50 + taxes for non-financial transactions
SBI (State Bank of India)
New rule from 1 February 2025
Every customer will get 5 free SBI ATM transactions and 10 free ATM transactions of other banks, irrespective of balance or location.
What should customers do?
If you frequently withdraw money from ATM, then you should be alert about these new charges. You can avoid extra charges by adopting options like digital payment, UPI, or net banking. This new charge of Axis Bank will have a special impact on those customers who often make cash transactions. Therefore, plan your transactions in time and give priority to digital options.
