Railway Luggage Rules: Now your luggage will be weighed at the railway station too, if you exceed the limit you will have to pay a charge!

Railway Luggage Rules: To make train travel more comfortable, Indian Railways is tightening its luggage rules. Now travelling with large and heavy luggage will prove to be expensive. Railways is installing electronic machines to weigh luggage at major stations like airports. There will be a fixed limit for carrying luggage for every class. This initiative is being started as a pilot project in the NCR zone.

Railway Luggage Rules: If you also have a habit of carrying all your household items with you while traveling by train, then now you need to change this habit. Indian Railways is now preparing to strictly implement baggage rules on the lines of airports, after which big and heavy luggage will also weigh heavy on your pocket. The purpose of this new rule is to reduce the inconvenience to passengers inside the coach and make the journey more comfortable.

Weighing machines have started being installed at big stations

Railways has now started the process of installing luggage scanners and electronic weighing machines like airports at many big stations of the country. This system is being implemented first in the North Central Railway (NCR) zone as a pilot project. About Rs 960 crore will be spent under this.

How will the system work

Your luggage will be weighed at the entry point of the station. If your luggage is within the prescribed limit, only then will you be allowed to go to the platform. Not only the weight, the size of the luggage will also be monitored. If a luggage is less in weight but very big in size, then an additional charge can be levied on it.

How much luggage can you carry in which class?

The limit of free luggage for each class in the railways is already fixed. However, till now it was not strictly followed. Now you have to keep in mind these limits:

  • AC First AC 70 kg
  • AC Second Class (2nd AC) 50 kg
  • AC Third AC/Chair Car (3rd AC/Chair Car) 40 kg
  • Sleeper Class 40 kg
  • General Class (Second Sitting) 35 kg

What to do if you have more luggage than the limit?

If your luggage is more than the set free limit, then there is no need to panic. Railways gives you the facility to book extra luggage and carry it.

Booking in parcel office

You can book your extra luggage by going to the parcel office present at the station. For this, you will have to pay 1.5 times the normal luggage rate.

Understand with an example

Suppose you are travelling 500 km in sleeper class and you have 80 kg luggage. The free limit of sleeper class is 40 kg, so your extra luggage is 40 kg. For this 40 kg, you will have to book in the parcel office, the fee for which will be around Rs 109.

If you break the rules, you will be fined 6 times!

If you are caught traveling with more luggage than the free limit without booking, you may have to pay a fine. According to the current rules of the Railways, if caught, a fine of up to 6 times the luggage booking charge on the extra luggage can be levied.

Why are new rules needed?

It is often seen in trains that some passengers board with so much luggage that there is no space left to move around in the coach. Large suitcases, sacks and boxes are kept in the aisle, which also makes it difficult for other passengers to reach their seats. This not only causes inconvenience, but can also become a major security risk in an emergency. To address these complaints and problems, the Railways has decided to strictly implement its old rules.
