Bank Locker Keys: Bank locker service is the best way for customers to keep valuables and documents safe. On renting a locker, the bank gives a key to the customer, with which only the customer can open the locker. But what to do if the key is lost? In such a situation, there are some necessary steps and bank policies for the customers.
Steps to be taken in case of losing the key
If your bank locker key is lost, first of all inform the bank immediately. Along with this, go to the nearest police station and register an FIR for the lost key. This FIR is the first step in the process of regaining access to your locker.
Options to access the locker
The bank usually provides duplicate keys in case of lost keys. If this is not possible, the bank initiates the basic locker breaking process with the consent of the customer. The contents inside the locker are transferred to a new locker and the customer is given a new key. The customer has to bear the cost of this process i.e. breaking the locker and the repair cost.
Rules for breaking the locker
The process of breaking the locker is done in the presence of the customer and the bank representative. If the locker is on a joint account, then the presence of all the account holders is mandatory. If the customer cannot be present, he has to give written consent.
Bank rights to break the locker
According to the policy of State Bank of India (SBI) and other banks, if the customer does not pay the locker rent continuously for three years, then the bank can break the locker to recover the outstanding amount. Similarly, if a locker is not active for seven years and the customer does not come to the bank, then the bank has the right to open it, whether the rent has been paid or not.
Rules for breaking open a locker in criminal cases
If a customer is facing criminal charges and the locker is suspected to contain evidence related to the crime, the bank and police officials can break open the locker in the absence of the customer. Customers should be cautious and follow the bank’s rules if they lose their keys.
