But first, let’s understand what an e-passport is.

What is an e-passport?

E-passports look similar to regular passports. They have a chip embedded in the cover page of the passport. This chip contains personal information about the individual. Personal information such as biometric data, fingerprints, and other personal information is stored digitally in this chip.

It’s similar to a regular passport, except there’s a small golden chip at the bottom of the cover. This helps indicate that it’s an e-passport. The actual chip is located inside the passport.

Anyone can apply for an e-passport, whether they’re making a new passport or renewing one. However, if it hasn’t arrived in your city yet, you can’t apply.

How to Apply?

Step 1 – First, you need to visit the official passport website.

Step 2 – If you haven’t registered yet, you’ll need to do so. Existing users can log in directly.

Step 3 – Submit the required information and documents in the form. You’ll then need to make an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or post office.

Step 4 – Then, go to the Passport Seva Kendra and have your documents verified. Finally, your passport will be delivered to your home.

What documents are required?

To obtain an e-passport, you will need to submit the following documents for proof:

Identity Proof

  • Aadhaar Card
  • PAN Card

Voter ID Card

Proof of Address

Electricity Bill

Proof of Date of Birth

Birth Certificate

What is the fee?

There is no change in the fees for e-passports. They remain the same. The fees for e-passports are as follows:

If you choose instant service, this fee can increase to Rs 3500 to Rs 4000.
