Vande Bharat Sleeper Fare: Indian Railways is soon launching a new offering. It’s called the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express. This train will offer travelers a completely new experience. The most distinctive feature of this train is that it won’t offer Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), meaning you’ll either get a confirmed ticket or a non-confirmed one. This train will be slightly more expensive than existing premium trains like the Rajdhani Express. Its minimum fare will be equivalent to a distance of 400 kilometers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the Guwahati-Howrah route next week. It is expected to reduce travel time by up to three hours compared to existing express trains.

In a circular issued on January 9, the Railway Board stated, “The minimum chargeable distance will be 400 kilometers. Only confirmed tickets will be issued for this train. There will be no provision for RAC/waitlisted/partially confirmed tickets. All berths will be available from the day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).” Waitlisted tickets for AC class on other express trains are not accepted and are automatically cancelled, while RAC tickets are often issued in case of non-confirmation. Under RAC, two passengers are allowed to share a side lower berth.

Like other trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will have quotas for women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and senior citizens. There will also be a duty pass quota for employees. Passengers will be charged ₹2.4 per km for 3AC, ₹3.1 per km for 2AC, and ₹3.8 per km for First AC. Thus, the minimum fare for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, for distances up to 400 kilometers, will be ₹960 for 3AC, ₹1,240 for 2AC, and ₹1,520 for 1AC. GST will be levied on this. Similarly, for a distance of 1,000 kilometers—between the launch route of Howrah and Guwahati—fares will be ₹2,400 for 3AC, ₹3,100 for 2AC, and ₹3,800 for 1AC. The fare for a distance of 2,000 kilometers will be ₹4,800 for 3AC, ₹6,200 for 2AC, and ₹7,600 for 1AC.

Higher fares than existing premium trains

These fares are slightly higher than existing premium trains. Although the Rajdhani Express does not run between Howrah and Guwahati, the CSMT Rajdhani Express, which runs between Delhi and Mumbai, charges ₹2.10 (3AC), ₹2.85 (2AC), and ₹3.53 (1AC) per kilometer. The highest fares on the Howrah-Guwahati (Kamakhya Junction) route are for the Saraighat Express – ₹1,410 (3AC), ₹1,985 (2AC), and ₹3,320 (1AC).

What will be the train’s route?

The semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are set to set a new standard for luxurious, comfortable, and safe travel. This is the same reputation that Rajdhani Express trains have enjoyed for decades, having launched from Howrah in 1969. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will serve seven districts in West Bengal: Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Murshidabad, Malda, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar, and 10 stops in Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam. These will be overnight journeys, departing late in the evening and arriving at their destinations in the morning.

What will be the train’s speed?

The train will have 16 coaches, including 11 3AC, four 2AC, and one 1AC coaches. The train can reach speeds of 180 kmph. However, for safety reasons, it will only operate at 130 kmph for this service. Rajdhani Expresses typically operate at an average speed of 80-90 kmph. Other features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper include ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules for easy movement, improved ride comfort with improved suspension, and noise reduction. The train is equipped with ‘Kavach’ and an emergency talk-back system. It features disinfectant technology for maintaining hygiene, a driver’s cab with advanced controls and an aerodynamic exterior design, and automatic external passenger doors.
