Temporary airfare caps to be lifted from today
The government has decided to lift the temporary cap on domestic airfares from March 23rd. This cap was imposed in response to the disruptions to IndiGo flights last December. According to an order issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the cap on airfares will be lifted from March 23rd.
The decision comes at a time when various airlines are facing significant operational disruptions on international routes due to the conflict in West Asia. In the order, the ministry also said airlines are required to maintain discipline and act responsibly in pricing. “Airlines shall ensure that fares remain reasonable, transparent and in line with market conditions and do not adversely impact passenger interests,” it said.
The ministry also emphasized that any cases of excessive or unreasonable fare increases and disruptions will be viewed seriously. The ministry is monitoring airfares on a real-time basis. According to the order, temporary limits on domestic airfares were imposed on December 6 to prevent abnormal increases in ticket prices due to the widespread disruptions to IndiGo flights.
