Toll Tax- The central government is considering introducing ‘Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card’. Nitin Gadkari is in favor of implementing it pan India, which will provide discount in toll tax.

New Delhi. There is good news for the drivers using the toll plazas of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) across the country. The central government is considering introducing ‘Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card’. Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is in favor of implementing this scheme at the pan India level. This smart card will be valid at all toll plazas in the country and the cardholder will also get exemption in toll tax. This move of the government can provide great relief especially to commercial  vehicles and people traveling frequently on expressways. According to sources, Nitin Gadkari is seriously considering implementing this scheme soon.

The government is working towards implementing Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for toll collection, in such a situation the question arises that how will this smart card work? On this, officials said that it will take time for the GNSS system to be implemented across the country. After the implementation of the GNSS system, a small machine will be installed in the vehicles, which will deduct the fee as per the  vehicle’s travel on the toll road. However, the smart card feature will also be added to the satellite toll system so that vehicles that travel frequently can pay the toll on the basis of monthly pass.

Will everyone get the benefit

Ministry sources did not give a clear answer on whether those who do not take monthly passes will have to pay the fee under the existing toll system or they will also be given some kind of exemption. However, regular commuters are definitely expected to get a big relief in toll tax under the smart card scheme.

Will be beneficial for commercial vehicles

Experts believe that this smart card will prove to be especially beneficial for commercial vehicles, which often travel long distances. This will not only make the process of toll payment easier, but will also reduce the expenses of regular commuters. The final decision on this plan of the government can be taken soon and as soon as it is implemented, lakhs of commuters across the country are likely to get relief in toll tax.
