Rule Change News: From LPG to Credit Card, these 5 major changes will be implemented in the country from May 1!

Rule Change News: The month of April is drawing to a close, and the month of May is set to usher in several major financial changes across the country. These changes could range from revisions in LPG cylinder prices to alterations in the LPG delivery system. Additionally, changes are also in store for credit card users of the State Bank of India (SBI). Let us explore five such significant changes that will come into effect on the first of next month—changes that are bound to impact every household and every wallet.

First Change: LPG Cylinder Prices

As is the practice on the first day of every month, oil marketing companies will revise LPG cylinder prices and release new rates on May 1st. Any changes made in this regard will have an impact ranging from household kitchens to restaurants and hotels. In the preceding month of April, the prices of both 14-kilogram domestic and 19-kilogram commercial gas cylinders were increased; these rates could undergo further changes on May 1st.

Turning to other changes related to LPG, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are currently deliberating on the LPG cylinder delivery system. According to reports, the companies may modify the lock-in period for cylinder bookings. Additionally, the OTP-based delivery system could be implemented on a permanent basis.

Second Change: ATF to CNG-PNG Prices

Effective May 1, 2026, in addition to changes in LPG cylinder prices, oil companies may revise and announce new rates for aviation fuel—specifically, Air Turbine Fuel (ATF). While its price had been doubled at the beginning of April, the hiked rates were subsequently rolled back. Apart from ATF prices, changes may also be made to CNG and PNG rates. Consequently, the first day of May could impact the pockets of everyone—from air travelers to those driving vehicles on the roads.

Third Change: Credit Card Rule Changes

The third change, effective from May 1, 2026, pertains to credit card users. According to information provided on the SBI Card website, changes have been announced regarding various charges, ranging from late payment fees to annual fees. Effective from the first of next month, the Late Payment Charge (LPC) for outstanding amounts exceeding ₹100 but not exceeding ₹500 will be revised to ₹100. Furthermore, for outstanding amounts exceeding ₹500 but not exceeding ₹1,000, this fee will be set at ₹500. Apart from these adjustments, all other charges will remain unchanged. Additionally, the annual fee of ₹499 applicable to the BPCL SBI Credit Card will now be reversed upon achieving an annual spend of ₹1 lakh—a threshold currently set at ₹50,000.

Fourth Change: Online Gaming Regulations

Effective May 1st, the regulations governing online gaming are also set to undergo changes. Under the Online Gaming Rules 2026 being implemented by the government, the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) will be established to oversee this sector. Its primary mandate will be to monitor and regulate the industry. As part of these changes, online games will be categorized into three distinct segments: Online Money Games, Online Social Games, and E-Sports. It will be mandatory for platforms hosting games involving monetary stakes to register with the authorities. Furthermore, the financial transactions of users engaging in such games will be kept under strict scrutiny.

Fifth Change: A Slew of Bank Holidays

If you have urgent banking-related tasks to attend to in the month of May, be sure to consult the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) list of bank holidays before stepping out of your home. May features a substantial number of bank holidays. In addition to the weekly Sunday breaks—along with the second and fourth Saturdays—holidays have been declared for banks on various occasions, ranging from Maharashtra Day/Labor Day and Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary to Eid-ul-Adha. These bank holidays may vary from one state to another. During this period, banking-related tasks can be completed by utilizing online banking services.
