IMD Rainfall Alert: Heavy rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms will occur in 19 states; IMD issues Red Alert.
Today’s Weather Update: Amidst scorching heat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for light to torrential rainfall across several parts of the country over the next few days. Snowfall is likely in the hilly states of Northwest India, while dust storms accompanied by rain are expected in the plains. Meanwhile, an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for the states of Northeast and East India. In its forecast, the IMD stated that weather conditions in Northwest India are set to deteriorate due to the activation of a Western Disturbance.
According to the forecast issued by the Meteorological Department on April 29, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are likely in several parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between April 29 and May 4. During this period, strong winds gusting at speeds of 40–50 km/h may prevail. Furthermore, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi may experience scattered showers accompanied by thunder and lightning between April 29–30 and again from May 2–4. Specifically, a storm warning has been issued for Punjab and Haryana on April 29, with wind speeds expected to reach 50–70 km/h. There is a strong possibility of severe dust storms occurring in the eastern and western parts of Rajasthan on April 29.
‘Red Alert’-like Situation in These States
Weather conditions in the states of Northeast India are forecast to remain extremely adverse over the next four days. Arunachal Pradesh may experience extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places between April 30 and May 2. In Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, the spell of heavy rainfall is expected to continue from April 29 to May 3. The Meteorological Department has advised the public to remain vigilant and stay away from waterlogged areas.
Shadow of Cyclonic Winds Over Bihar
A spell of storms and rainfall is expected to continue across West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha for the next six days. According to the Meteorological Department, winds gusting at speeds of 50–70 km/h may sweep across Bihar, Jharkhand, and the Gangetic regions of West Bengal on April 29 and 30. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in Jharkhand during these two days. Sikkim may experience extremely heavy rainfall on April 29.
According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by winds blowing at speeds of 40–50 km/h is forecast for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha over the next three days. Furthermore, heavy rainfall is likely in the interior regions of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka between April 30 and May 2. Hailstorms may occur in the interior areas of Karnataka on April 29. Warnings regarding thunderstorms and lightning strikes have also been issued for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
