Let us first inform you about the regions where residents may have to endure the severity of heat and heatwaves over the coming week.

Heatwave Alert for Central and Eastern India

As the summer season intensifies, the IMD has issued a warning regarding the occurrence of heatwaves across several parts of the country. Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail until April 23 in East and West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Marathwada, and Central Maharashtra. During the last week of April, temperatures in Central India and the adjoining South Peninsular regions (Eastern Rajasthan and the southern parts of Uttar Pradesh) could remain 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal. ‘Hot and humid’ weather conditions are expected to persist in the coastal regions of Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat, and South India.

Rain and Hailstorm

Amidst the scorching heat, there is a possibility of showers bringing relief—as well as hailstorms—in certain states. Let us provide you with a state-wise breakdown of this information. Between April 17 and April 20, rain and lightning strikes are likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland. From April 17 to April 19, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are expected to witness weather activity; subsequently, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan face a possibility of isolated light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to experience isolated to light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds (gusting up to 30–50 km/h) between April 17 and April 19; similar conditions are expected in the Gangetic Plains of West Bengal on April 17, in Bihar on April 18, and in Odisha between April 17 and April 21. Isolated heavy rainfall is also possible in West Bengal and Sikkim on April 18.

Similarly, on April 19 and 20, isolated light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h) is likely over West Madhya Pradesh; lightning strikes are also probable in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on April 20. Isolated light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h), is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on April 17, and over Interior Karnataka on April 19 and 20.

Lightning strikes are likely over Coastal Karnataka during April 17–20; over North Interior Karnataka on April 17 and 18; over South Interior Karnataka on April 18; over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam during April 18–20; over Telangana on April 19 and 20; and over Rayalaseema on April 20. Isolated light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over Madhya Maharashtra during April 18–20 and over Marathwada during April 18–21.

Weekly Review

During the past week, the country recorded rainfall that was 46% below normal. However, considering the entire season from March 1 to April 15, the rainfall recorded so far stands at 14% above normal.
