Good News: Electricity consumers will no longer be forced to install smart meters – Details

The Central Government has provided significant relief to electricity consumers; they will no longer be required to install prepaid smart meters. Consumers will now be able to choose between prepaid and postpaid smart meters according to their convenience. The Central Electricity Authority amended the regulations on April 1, 2026.

There is good news for electricity consumers in the district. The Central Government has lifted the mandate for prepaid smart meters, granting consumers the right to choose between postpaid and prepaid smart meter options. Smart meters will now be installed across the district; however, it will be up to the consumer to decide whether they wish to opt for a prepaid or a postpaid connection.

It is worth noting that the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) issued a new notification on April 1, 2026, amending the smart meter regulations. Under this new framework, the installation of a smart meter has been made mandatory for consumers. However, the authority to choose between a prepaid and a postpaid smart meter has been vested in the consumer.

Consumers can now have a prepaid or postpaid smart meter installed according to their own preference. Under the postpaid option, the smart meter will function just like a standard meter, generating a bill once at the end of the month; furthermore, consumers will be liable to pay compound interest on any outstanding dues.

These include facilities provided by state governments—accessible through an app developed by the electricity department—such as real-time information on electricity consumption, accurate billing, easy payment options, the integration of smart meters with solar panels, and discounts on online recharges.

Departmental officials emphasize that, first and foremost, it is crucial for electricity consumers to understand that a smart meter is simply a device designed solely to record electricity consumption readings. The electricity tariff rate is determined annually by the respective State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and electricity bills are generated in accordance with those rates.

The Technician’s Role: Solely to Replace the Meter

According to this new amendment, consumers will now have the flexibility to decide—at their own convenience—whether they wish to recharge their account or pay a bill at the end of the month. This decision now rests entirely in the hands of the consumers. Appealing to the public, departmental officials urge consumers to allow the technician to carry out their work when they arrive at your home to replace the meter.

Please remember that the technician’s sole responsibility is to install the meter. Even if they wished to do so, they cannot alter your billing mode (prepaid or postpaid), as this falls outside their jurisdiction. This authority lies exclusively with the Electricity Department.
