Weather Update: IMD issues storm alert for 20+ states, heavy rain expected in these 9 places, check weather in your area
Today’s Weather 15 June: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide high alert regarding the weather for today i.e. 15 June. According to IMD, the southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly. Its northern limit (NLM) is currently passing through Harnai, Solapur, Hyderabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Kalingapatnam, Paradip, Baripada, Purulia, Dhanbad and Muzaffarpur. In the next 4 to 5 days, the monsoon may advance into some more parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and South Chhattisgarh.
Due to this weather activity, heavy rain alerts have been issued in nine states today. Additionally, warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, and lightning have been issued in more than 20 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Heavy rain will occur at these 9 places today
According to the latest weather department report, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in the northeastern states and hilly areas of eastern India today, June 15th. These include the following states:
Arunachal Pradesh
Assam
Meghalaya
Nagaland
Manipur
Mizoram
Tripura
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal
Sikkim
There is a serious possibility of heavy rain along with thunder and lightning in these northeastern states and Bengal-Sikkim today.
Thunderstorm with speed of 60-80 kmph in Rajasthan, UP and MP
Winds could be extremely dangerous and destructive today in parts of northwest and central India. The IMD has issued a thunderstorm alert for the following areas:
Rajasthan: The most severe thunderstorms are expected in Rajasthan today. Thunderstorms are expected to occur in parts of the state at speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 80 kilometers per hour. Dust storms are also expected in areas of western Rajasthan.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh: Strong wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph (gusting up to 70 kmph) and severe thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is forecast for eastern UP today.
West Madhya Pradesh: The weather here will also remain quite rough today. Thunderstorms with winds of up to 50-60 kilometers per hour and thunderstorms are expected.
Odisha: Thundersquall and thunderstorm alert with strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph has been issued in different parts of Odisha today.
Thunderstorm and gusty winds alert issued in 20+ states across the country
According to the Meteorological Department’s bulletin, more than 20 states across the country will experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of up to 40 to 50 kilometers per hour today. Check the weather forecast for your area below:
Northwest India: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad will experience winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph and dust storm or thunderstorm conditions today.
Eastern and Central India: Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Eastern Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha will also witness thunderstorms with strong winds today.
West and South India: Strong winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph and lightning are expected over Madhya Maharashtra, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal today.
Gentle winds (30-40 kmph): Thunderstorms with winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely over Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, and Telangana today. A warning for very strong surface winds has been issued for the Rayalaseema region today.
Heat wave and humid heat wreak havoc
While many states are experiencing storms and rain, some parts will still have to face the wrath of severe heat and heatwave:
Heat wave warning: Heat wave conditions will continue in isolated pockets of Marathwada and Vidarbha in Maharashtra today.
Konkan, Goa and Central Maharashtra: The weather is going to be extremely hot and humid in these coastal and central regions today.
Hot Nights: Some parts of Konkan and Goa are likely to experience hotter and more uncomfortable conditions tonight as well.
Temperature Rise: Maximum temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over northwest India until June 18. Temperatures will also rise gradually over central India until June 16, after which there will be no significant change.
Red alert for fishermen going to sea
Due to bad weather and stormy winds in the sea, the Meteorological Department has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea from June 15 to June 19, 2026. Stormy winds with speeds of 45-55 kmph (gusting up to 65 kmph) will prevail over the southwest and west-central Arabian Sea off the Somalia coast and the northwest Arabian Sea off the Oman coast.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas. Rough weather with winds reaching 40-50 kmph (gusting up to 60 kmph) is likely over the Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, Sri Lanka coast, many parts of south Bay of Bengal, northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, Andaman Sea and along and off south Myanmar coast. Fishermen are advised to avoid these areas.
